A mapping of the factors related to self-disclosure on social network sites

Privacy is a critical concern in the big data era, yet users continue to disclose personal information on social network sites. This article maps the factors affecting self-disclosure on social network sites using a systematic approach. It identifies models and theories used in self-disclosure research and highlights the role of relationship-building, social ties, norms, expected outcomes, privacy concerns, trust, perceived control and perceived similarity in shaping online disclosure behaviour.
